Founded in 1976, as a part of the Caledonian Society, the Baton Rouge Caledonian Pipes and Drums are dedicated to promoting the inspiring traditions of Scotland’s music and culture through performance and education. The band, under the leadership of Pipe Major Stanley Masinter, is sought after for performances for public, private, and commercial venues.
Baton Rouge's oldest pipe band, Baton Rouge Caledonian is a Grade V band and is a proud competitor in the pipe band competition circuit, traveling to various pipe band competitions in the South: from Texas to Georgia. The band is a member of the Southwest Branch of the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association (EUSPBA), with members serving on the EUSPBA SW Board.
In addition to competitions and Scottish cultural venues, the Caledonians are frequently called upon to serve for a wide range of community events. The band regularly marches in quite a number of area parades throughout the year: Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day, Independence Day, Halloween, Veterans’ Day, and Christmas. The band is proud to play for a number of Veterans’ and First Responder events throughout the year including: Wreaths Across America, The Fallen Firefighters’ Memorial, EBRP Sheriff's Dept. Victims of Crime Memorial, LA State Police Memorial for Fallen Police Officers, 9/11 Memorial Events, among other events.
Through many of these events, Baton Rouge Caledonian has had the opportunity to play for dignitaries such as Governor Bobby Jindal, Congressman Bill Cassidy, Mayor Kip Holden, and General Russel Honoré, among others.
The Band also plays or supplies solo pipers for other sundry events, such as weddings, funerals, parties, reunions, and pretty much anything imaginable.
The Band also offers free lessons for those interested in learning either the bagpipes or Scottish drumming, and has a standing invitation to any and all to participate. Read more about the teaching program here.
